A Field Guide to Choosing Scout, Ridge, or Colony

The kits board is the heart of the Outpost catalog: Scout, Ridge, Colony as three coherent stay stories from XYZ Industries. Choosing among them should feel like picking a home footprint—not leveling up through a game.

This guide uses soft language on purpose. Soft CTAs elsewhere say Shop kits, Configure your kit, See what’s inside. Here we say: match duration, crew, and calm.

Start with how long you stay

Scout — Days to about two weeks. First surveys. Two people who want to pack out clean. Compact Hab Dome, Hop Bag — Scout, Life Stack Scout, mini quiet nook, Compact Relay Pack. Optional Airlock Ring if the door needs to feel clearer.

Ridge — Multi-week stays. The balanced default. Hab Dome with Quiet Room Insert, Storm Shell recommended, Life Stack Ridge, Hop Bag — Ridge, soft Play set, Uplink Mast with Terminal Soft. Optional Airlock Ring beside Storm Shell.

Colony — Longer shared footprints. Expanded Hab with alcoves, Airlock Ring & Storm Shell as a featured Shelter pair, Site Transfer Totes, Life Stack Colony, layered Downtime and Play, full Signal.

If you are unsure, configure Ridge first. Most demo crews recognize it as “home for a while.”

Then count the people and the schedules

Two people with aligned days: Scout or Ridge.
Two to four with real evenings together: Ridge.
Four and up with overlapping shifts: Colony.

Quiet Room needs scale with schedule overlap more than with ego. Colony’s multiple quiet pockets are not luxury theater; they are how kindness survives shift work. Scout’s mini nook is honest about short stays—if the survey stretches, plan the path to Ridge’s insert rather than inventing a blanket fort forever.

  • Airlock Ring & Storm Shell — lean Ridge/Colony when sites are exposed and you want architecture-first Shelter.
  • Life Stack — size to kit; do not buy Colony ware for a Scout week.
  • Uplink Mast — choose when delay-aware conversation is part of the stay; Scout can note interest without carrying Mast on day one.

Travel depth rises with hop frequency. Downtime depth rises with evening hours in-habitat. Play Soft rises with morale needs—but open it last on arrival regardless of kit.

A short decision tree

  1. Is the stay short and exploratory? → Scout
  2. Is the stay a season on one ridge with a small crew? → Ridge
  3. Is sharing space the point, with logistics between zones? → Colony
  4. Still torn? → Configure Ridge, then subtract toward Scout or add toward Colony in the summary story.

What choosing is not

It is not a toughness ranking. It is not a survival badge. It is not mil-speak tiering. Outpost Kits stay light-professional and warm. The About page and Shop pages repeat the same idea: coherent systems for planetary stays that feel like living.

Ship notes differ by kit—crate counts and OPEN FIRST habits—but the emotional goal is shared: arrive calm. Privacy and Terms pages remind you this is a fictional demo company · Not a real business. Choose kits for the story you want to explore in the catalog.

When you can describe the first evening—threshold, kettle, quiet, optional cards—you have chosen well. Scout, Ridge, or Colony is just the name on the crate that makes that evening easy.
